Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García is the first immigrant elected to Congress from Illinois and has demonstrated expertise in the topic by leading the efforts to push the White House to fix our broken immigration system. Chuy has introduced and helped pass important legislation that would provide a path to citizenship and work permits out of the House of Representatives, despite efforts by Republicans to halt initiatives.  

Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García has been a staunch advocate for a woman's right to choose his entire career. In Congress, he’s pushed for executive action to expand access to reproductive care as well as the protection of providers and patients. He has been endorsed by Planned Parenthood many times throughout his career and has received numerous recognitions for his support of women’s reproductive rights and protecting abortion rights.

Our country needs Medicare for All because every person must have access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare. When healthcare is tied to employment, millions of Americans cannot access health insurance or cannot pay for it because it is too expensive. Because of systemic disparities, Latino, African American and immigrant communities have less access to healthcare--which leaves them with less preventive care and increased long-term health problems. Universal healthcare is necessary to correct these issues and to ensure that income, identity, or immigration status do not determine one's access to healthcare.

A lasting solution to crime and violence will only come when the root causes are understood and addressed. This involves investing in education, economic opportunities for underserved populations, community development, violence intervention and prevention, mental health access, as well as affordable housing. As a former community organizer, he knows the root causes of crime cannot be solved overnight, but these steps will make the long-term impact that has been lacking for too long. While immediate action and intervention will still be necessary to save lives and ensure the well-being of others, this balanced approach has to provide both immediate relief and sustainable, comprehensive measures for long-lasting improvements in public safety.

Gun Violence

Gun violence is a severe public health epidemic that requires our immediate intervention. He voted to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which will help keep deadly weapons away from dangerous individuals and youth and invest in school safety and mental health. Chuy advocates for sensible solutions, such as implementing common-sense background checks, prohibiting assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and cracking down on gun trafficking, to address and reduce gun violence.

The right to collectively bargain without intimidation or harassment is one of the most important rights for workers in the United States. All workers--including tipped workers, farm and domestic laborers--deserve a livable wage, paid sick leave, and safe working conditions. We must end the offshoring of jobs and corporate attacks on labor rights. Congressman García has secured a record amount of funding for working families in the district. From expanding and lowering the cost of healthcare, increasing access to child tax credits,  expanding child care and early learning programs, improving public transit, and putting people to work rebuilding our infrastructure, these federal dollars will immediately benefit working families. Chuy voted for the Families First Bill and the American Rescue Plan to provide stimulus checks and resources directly to working families. He knows working families are struggling to make ends meet and need our support, and believes billionaires should pay their fair share. 

Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García is a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and has secured billions of dollars to repair our roads and bridges, decrease congestion, increase access and safety of our public transit system, and invest in lead pipe and flood prevention replacement. Because of these investments, Chuy has helped create thousands of new good-paying union jobs and made our state a more desirable place to live and raise a family.

We are at a crossroads where we must take rapid action to prevent irreparable damage to our environment and climate. Congressman García supports the Green New Deal because we must reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and move toward a renewable energy economy that includes well-funded strategies for sustainable and increased opportunities for workers and small businesses.

Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García has introduced legislation that would help promote economic growth and empower entrepreneurs to participate in the transportation and infrastructure sector. There are more than 32 million small businesses in the United States, and those companies employ half of America's workforce. The 4th Congressional District is rich in small-business corridors, from the bustling stretches in Chicago to the pockets of shops across the suburbs. Chuy understands that these businesses are the backbone of our economy and need to be supported to promote prosperity in Illinois.

Congressman Chuy García has been a staunch advocate for efforts to maintain peace and prevent conflict internationally, including providing humanitarian relief, basic services, and developmental programs, as well as promoting diplomacy and prosperity. He has called for the protection of marginalized communities against oppression, undue targeting, displacement, inhumane conditions, and violence. Moreover, he has led congressional oversight on responsible international monetary policies and their disproportionate impact.

Latin America 

Over 21 million people have been displaced across Latin America as a result of U.S. foreign policy and other factors. As an immigrant, Congressman García has a personal commitment to ensuring we address the root causes of migration to the U.S., including violence, poverty, climate justice, and political instability. He has been very vocal about the role and impact of U.S. foreign policies on people from Latin America, including Mexico, the Northern Triangle, the Caribbean, and South America. Moreover, he has been a champion for immigration reform that recognizes the U.S. role in the displacement of people and advocates for humane, people-centered reform. To address this, he has supported numerous legislative efforts like the Dream and Promise Act, Re-registry designation, and Temporary Protective Status changes, and has also introduced the New Way Forward to decriminalize immigration and put an end to mass detention, deportations, and separation of families.

Ukraine 

Millions have been displaced from their homes and thousands have lost their lives as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Since 2022, Congressman García has been supportive of emergency relief for the Ukrainian people through military and refugee assistance, including basic services, food, and medical supplies. He believes Ukraine has the right to a sustainable recovery. To that end, he introduced the Ukraine Comprehensive Debt Payment Relief Act, which passed the House, to direct the World Bank, IMF, and other financial institutions to immediately suspend Ukraine’s debt payments. He continues to support humanitarian assistance and continues to urge for an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine.

Middle East 

Congressman García has a long history of working in coalition with the Muslim and Palestinian communities in the Chicagoland region and believes in their right to self-determination and human rights. He has supported a two-state solution rooted in a vision for peace, equality, and self-determination, echoing the sentiments of trusted stakeholders. He has also supported legislative efforts to combat Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. It is fundamental to respect the full civic and human rights of the Palestinian community, including calling for an end to the apartheid-like conditions along with the West Bank wall. After the recent Hamas attack, Chuy was one of the first members to call for a ceasefire, de-escalation, and release of all hostages, and also became an original co-sponsor of the ceasefire resolution. Since then, over 27,000 Palestinians have been killed, including over 11,500 innocent children. Congressman García believes we cannot bomb our way to peace and must seek a humanity-centered solution to save lives.
